Transform your IKEA breakfast tray
Your colours and your pattern, on a tray you’ll use every morning.
ÖSTBIT is a simple bamboo tray. This kit fills it edge to edge with handmade tiles, painted in your colours and fixed into a pattern that looks like it came from a riad in Fez. Once varnished it wipes clean, ready for breakfast in bed or drinks on the balcony.
Pattern: Moroccan zellige
Stars and crosses from edge to edge, in the style of Moroccan zellige. Slower, and very satisfying.

Where the patterns come from
These patterns belong to Islamic geometric art, a tradition that runs through more than a thousand years of buildings from Baghdad and Cairo to Fez, Granada and Seville. Its craftspeople built whole walls from a small set of shapes, cut and fitted by hand.
In Spain, the best-known examples are in the Alhambra, the palace the Nasrid dynasty built in Granada in the 13th and 14th centuries. In Morocco, zellige makers still cut tiles by hand today.
TileKit doesn’t copy those walls, and it isn’t zellige. We study the original patterns, redraw them as tiles anyone can paint and fit, and make every tile by hand in our Barcelona studio. In our workshops we teach where each pattern comes from.
The tray’s star pattern is drawn from Moroccan zellige. Real zellige is cut from glazed, kiln-fired clay by trained craftspeople; ours is a painted, beginner-friendly homage to it.
If the patterns get under your skin, go and see the real thing.
